True Self is an original piece from my Doubt series.

Bridging early abstract work with the emerging Doubt figures

Painted after Shadow of Doubt, this larger work sits at the point where my earlier abstract face style begins to merge with the first fully formed Doubt creatures.

The idea sparked while I was watching Severance, the sci fi show where workers live as split versions of themselves with no memory of each other. It reminded me of an old sketch of a hunched figure trapped at a desk, a simple depiction of feeling stuck in a job that does not fit.

That sketch found its way into this painting, with the Doubt creature leaning in and whispering not to take risks. The push and pull between the two sides raises the central question of the piece.

True Self asks whether we are ever one fixed version of ourselves, or a shifting collection of selves shaped by circumstance.
